Temporary housing

How much temporary housing is required?

Pre-transplant accommodation when patients/caregivers are in town for appointments If you live out of town, before you have your lung transplant, you may need to come to Vancouver for tests and appointments.  As this will only be for a night or two at a time, most patients and caregivers check into an Airbnb or Bed/Breakfast accommodation.

Temporary caregiver housing while the transplant recipient is recovering in hospital In the weeks after your loved one has had a lung transplant, the out-of-town patient caregiver will need to find temporary accommodation, while ultimately establishing a longer-term temporary housing arrangement for the ~three-month transplant recovery period in Vancouver.

Post-transplant ~3-month temporary housing for both transplant recipient and caregiver As lung transplant patients have no prior notice of their lung transplant date, planning is not possible for many coming into Vancouver from out-of-town.
What patient need must housing accommodate?
A patient recovering from a lung transplant and living with new lungs plus a suppressed immune system needs housing that will:
  • Accommodate both patient and their caregiver
  • Has a self-contained bathroom and kitchen facilities
  • Has few or ideally no stairs
